Part A: the W projects
The purpose of the W projects is to look at water quality, acid rain, and the water cycle through 9 different work stations that utilize activities, select videos, and Internet research to explore the importance of water to humans and other species, as well as examine how our usage of water effects the longevity of our supply and the ability for other species to utilize this resource.

W1: The Incredible Journey
Get dice from Mr. Sklar and complete the activity before the end of the period. Individually produce a story book based on your journey. The booklet is due the Monday following the completion of the W projects.

W2: Book Work Part 1
Complete this activity in the classroom using the text handout "Ecology; Earth's Natural Resources." The focus of this material is to study the water cycle and examine present and future fresh water sources.

W3: Video Notes
There are select pieces of video clips that have been carefully edited together by Mr. Sklar. The topics are waste water management and water in Canada. The total running time is 50min, so if you are to complete this by the end of the period, get cracking.

W4: Frog Fact Find
Answer the questions outlined in the booklet, submit your answers the following day. The websites where you will find the information to these questions are at the following two locations:
    http://www.naturewatch.ca/english/frogwatch/sa
    http://wwwlnaturewatch.ca/english/frogwatch/sa/monitor/html

W5: Municipal Wastewater
You have two days to complete the worksheets and create the poster. In order to answer the questions, you need to attain the "Municipal Wastewater" pamphlet that has been reproduced on orange paper. The question portion is due the following day, the poster is due on the Monday following the completion of the W projects.

W6: Create A Pictorial of the Water Cycle
As a group, draw a water cycle on an 11x17 sheet of paper, be sure to include oceans, rivers, lakes, clouds, glaciers, plants, animals, soil, and ground water. Your water cycle posters are due the Monday following the completion of the W projects.

W7: The ABCs of Acid Rain
Complete the assigned questions using the following website: www.qlink.queensu.ca/~41rm4/table.htm.
The questions are due the following day.

W8: Water, Pollution, and Society
Complete the assigned questions using the following website: www.umich.edu/~gs265/society/waterpollution.htm.
The questions are due the following day.

W9: Book Work Part 2
Complete this activity in the classroom using the text handout "Ecology; Earth's Natural Resources." The focus of this material is to examine water quality; pollution from fossil fuels, nuclear power, sewage and agricultural runoff, and disposal of hazardous wastes.

Day A11: Research on water-born disease
- Students are to pick a water-born disease from a list provided by Mr. Sklar
- The students have to research the water-born disease and prepare a presentation
Click here to find a list of criteria by which the student will be marked and a list of water-born diseases

Day A12 and A13: Continue research on water-born disease

Day A14 and A15: Give Report on water-born disease

Day A16: Town Hall; the building of La'cole Falls
  - Students are issued characters within the community with specific interests concerning the project
  - Students are given time to research the project and construct arguments

Day A17: Time given to research for the town hall meeting

Day A18: Date of the town hall meeting

Day A19: Hand out review sheets for the W section

Day A20: Mid Unit E

Part B: Characteristics of Water
The purpose of this part of the unit is to explore the characteristics that make water so important to life on Earth, from our creation to habitability of our planet. Each characteristic has been given its own day of study and includes scientific observation, notes specific to that characteristic, visualization of interaction on a molecular level, and where we find these characteristics working in the environment around us.
***Each Class begins with a quiz on the material from the prior class so we may stay atop of this information***

Day B1-B3: Research a specific characteristic of water and formulate a laboratory that will provide an example of that characteristic to fellow classmates. As the Unit progresses, students will share these "quick starts" with their fellow classmates.

Day B4: Hydrogen Bonding

Day B5: Quantity/Variety of Substances Dissolved by Water

Day B6: Expansion on Freezing

Day B7: Heat and Temperature, the Specific Heat Capacity of Water

Day B8: Evaporation

Day B9: Capillary Action

Day B10: Surface Tension

Day B11: Boiling Point Elevation

Day B12: Freezing Point Depression

Day B13: Hand out Review Questions

Day B14: Review Test

Day B15: Unit Test on Part B of the Water Unit
