The purpose of this exercise is to introduce you, the new chemistry student, to the elements on the periodic table. By distributing the elements amongst the students in the class, we will be able to produce a visual learning aid that we will build upon during the course of this semester.

There are two parts to this assignment; the production of a visual aid and an oral presentation.

a

Oral Presentation
The oral presentation should be 1-2 min long.

Marking Scheme:

discovery and history of the element:
  1                                         2                                         3                                         4
not covered                       found a few items                       found 4-6 related items               covered in detail

refinement, where it is found, and uses:
  1                                         2                                         3                                         4
not covered                       found a few items                       found 4-6 related items               covered in detail

  clarity and preparation:
  1                                         2                                         3                                         4
could not be heard          stumbled, not prepared                 still needs a little polishing         loud, clear, smooth

  time management:
  1                                         2                                         3                                         4
out by more than 1min       out by more than 30s                     out by less than 30 s                 between 1-2 min

Visual Material
This is to be used by the entire class, so it is imperative that the information be visible from across the room. The element is to be presented on a 8.5"x11" sheet of paper in the portrait view. If you have any questions, reference the sample elements as posted by Mr. Sklar. Be sure the symbol is large and placed in the middle of the sheet and place the atomic number in the upper left hand corner.

Marking Scheme:

  quality of the visual aid:
  1                                         2                                         3                                         4
minimal effort                      lots of white space                made an attempt to draw, poster          top of the class
put forth                         on the sheet or scribbling            in full colour and shows effort             effort is evident
