Day 6: Contents of the Atom then Research Time for Atomic Theory Presentation
-Over Head "Contents of the Atom"
-Discuss prior knowledge, how each component contributes to chemical properties or change as we know it, and solidly link the "stability" of the proton to atomic number
-Library time to work on Atomic Theory Presentation

Contents of the Atom
Begin by asking the students what they know about the atom, what is it made of? On the white board, construct a model using the knowledge they retained from grade 10 science.
Students copy an overhead outlining the contents and characteristics of the atom from the smallest to largest part. As we work through the overhead, the stability of each is discussed. Protons change in nuclear reactions, neutrons lost leads to radiation, and electrons are frequently lost, gained, or shared; the basis of all chemical change. Start to enforce the understanding that the number of protons identifies the element and the element identifies the number of protons, this relationship was made since protons are vary stable and only change during nuclear reactions.

Library/Internet Research
