Identifying the Elemental Components of Molecular Formulas
Students are shown four models of molecules and given four formulas and are asked to determine which model goes with which formula. This is designed to give the students real space meaning to the formulas they are looking at as wells as the numbering system in the language of chemistry.
As a class, we then look at four formulas of varying complexity and determine the elemental components of each. The students are then asked to individually determine the components of two complex molecules. After these two molecules are discussed as a class, the Identifying components of molecules assignment is given for homework.
The students are given ten minutes to work on the assignment, the remainder of the class is spent in the Library working on their element homework.

Google Search
Students have to learn how to effectively Google search. With the class, brainstorm terms that could be used to conduct your Google search. Talk about the effectiveness of using quotes and identify particular terms that will help them find their desired material.
