Orbital Filling Electron Configuration Notes
This is a very long
series of notes. The overheads have been designed so they start with the
simplest orbital filling electron configurations and as the lesson
progresses, rules are individually added until all scenarios that
surface in chem20 have been addressed.
1. Simple filling of N, NA, and Co metal- students refer back
to the aid from day 13. Everyone draws the circles and we fill in the
electrons, one in an orbital at a time until it is full, we then double
up the electrons in that orbital. Once full, draw the next orbital.
2. Charged species- notice how a charge changes the number of
electrons. We draw the orbitals one at a time, fill as in question 1
until all the electrons have been placed.
3. Nobel gas cores- students identify the last noble gas
passed before we reach our electron configuration. We then enforce the
idea that [Ne] = a full 1s, 2s, and 2p.
4. Introduction of shorthand- circles are replaced by 1s2,
2s2, 2p6...
5. Promotion of electrons from the ground state to the
excited state. An electron may be bumped from an s orbital to a p
orbital if they are on the same row and the s orbital is full and one of
the p orbitals is completely empty.
Orbital Filling Electron Configuration Assignment
The assignment has
students practice all methods of orbital filling electron configurations
and covers all possible scenarios to drive all potential questions to
the surface. Some questions involve the filling of d orbitals, but none
include f orbitals as both of these orbitals do not fill in an
elementary way and have been ignored as their filling follows no
specific pattern and would have to be studied on a case by case basis.
