Quiz on Atomic Model
Students are given a
sheet similar to the jigsaw that they had completed during the atomic
theory review. The quiz helps them to begin studying for the unit test.
Orbital Filling Electron Configuration
Students look at an
overhead depicting the shape of electron clouds and liken electrons to
children in a house and orbitals as rooms in the house. The parents are
the nucleus and as the number of "children" increase, the atom needs
more rooms to house all these children. At first we put one kid in each
room (orbital), but as the number of kids increase, we have to start
doubling up the number of kids in each room. We only want a maximum of
two kids in a room, more than that and our house gets a little chaotic.
So, once all the rooms have two kids, the atom must add on more rooms
(orbitals) if it is to house more kids. At first, the shape of the
orbitals are very simple (the s and p orbitals are depicted by balloon
models for the students) But, as the number of rooms increases, the
atoms has to get creative with its orbital shapes in order to make room
for all these electrons while keeping them close to the nucleus.
Students are then give a coloring device Mr. Sklar has
created that likens the shape of the periodic table to the electron
filling order. The purpose of this approach is to have students learn
orbital filling using their periodic table instead of memorizing some
device that is often incorrectly scribbled on their test or have them
rely on an aid that will not be permitted in future chemistry endeavors.
This is another way that students are trained to use the periodic table
as their own "cheat note" by truly learning the complexities behind the
order of the table. Together, Mr. Sklar and the class colour in the
learning aid.
If finished early, the class then begins day 13
