After School Athletics

There were two after school recreational sports that I was involved with. The School had a floor hockey league in which the teachers had a team. We also had an indoor soccer meeting weekly once the floor hockey season wrapped up.

Floor hockey allowed the students to get to know the teachers as people instead of being purely viewed as the authoritarian figure in the classroom. It also allowed the students an opportunity to vent frustrations towards staff in a positive manner...streaking past a couple teachers and flipping the puck past Mr. Walters. The league was also an incentive for students to take school a little more seriously as not everyone could participate. The criteria included a full class load, good attendance, and no incidents where disciplinary action had to be taken by the administration.

The soccer program was not as well organized as floor hockey. It was primarily a chance for students interested in the sport to get in shape for the upcoming season and refine their skills. The teams were constructed as people arrived or left the gym, it was purely recreational.

Both activities played an important part in the community. It gave students a constructive, positive means of spending an evening with friends, an opportunity to meet new people, and a healthy workout.
